More than just an educational system
or method, Montessori is a philosophy based on the learning
of children within a social environment that develops
their individual capacities.
The Montessori Philosophy |
|
Doctor María Montessori
believed that no human being could be educated by another.
Every individual had to do things for him/herself, since
it is the only true way of learning.
A well educated individual will forever
continue learning, even after the hours spent in a classroom,
because he is internally motivated by curiosity and
an authentic love for education and knowledge.
María Montessori therefore
believed that the main goal to children¹s education
should not be filling their mind with previously selected
academic facts, but cultivating and inspiring their
personal desire to learn.
How do Home-Two Montessori kids learn? |
|
In Home Two-Montessori there are
two ways of lightening the children¹s longing to
learn:
- Enabling the child to experience
the joy of learning by him/herself without being obliged.
- Helping him/her to perfect his
natural aptitudes for learning, thus allowing these
abilities to be present at their highest level in
future learning situations.
- The entirety of our didactic material
was designed by María Montessori and other
great educators, and is indispensable in our classes.
Our material not only contributes to the immediate
learning of children, but also stimulates abilities
that will accompany them on the long run.
María Montessori based her
writings on scientific observations from children¹s
behavior.
Being the first woman to ever graduate
from medicine in the University of Rome, she started
giving medical attention to children with special disabilities.
In 1907 she opened a special home to care for children
with low economic resources in San Lorenzo, Rome. She
called it ³The House of Children,² and based
her program on her personal observations that children
learn better in an environment that resembles their
own home and that is filled with materials that portray
appropriate experiences. She henceforth created an environment
where children were self-motivated to become independent
and do things on their own.
- Children are different from adults
and must be respected as unique individuals.
- Children accomplish self-development
by participating in activities with specific purposes.
- The most important and influential
period of life is the first age: the years between
birth and six years of age.
- Children posses a great sensibility
and mental power to absorb what is provided by the
environment.
How do Children in Home-Two Montessori work? |
|
Children can achieve high levels
of concentration and have an innate respect and love
for order. They prefer to choose certain activities
and treat them as if they were serious tasks, not games.
In the Home-Two Montessori classroom,
children operate under the principle of: ³liberty
within a prepared environment.² They must respect
this medium and the persons found inside of it. The
individual working rhythm of each child and the materials
that they choose to work with must be respected at the
same time. The guide observes and determines which new
activities must be presented individually or to a reduced
group of children.
Children may get involved in our
institutions once they are a year and four months old,
or as soon as they can feel comfortable in an educational
environment. The child will begin with simple activities
that he/she enjoys.
Any material that children use will
contribute to develop their concentration and working
habits, which will be needed to carry out more advanced
exercises later on.
In Home Two- Montessori we prepare
children for life, and not only for school. Our boys
and girls achieve elevated concentration levels and
develop a high self esteem. We prepare them to confront
different situations and search for solutions on their
own, with a great respect for others and the environment
that surrounds them.
